The On Cloudsurfer 2 is the successor to the On Cloudsurfer 7, which is confusing, but On decided to reset the numbering for the line with the Cloudsurfer 7, which is also known as the On Cloudsurfer (2023).

It’s a cushioned daily trainer with a smooth rockered ride, and sits in the On range alongside models like the Cloudmonster 2 and the Cloudeclipse. Rivals from other brands include the Adidas Adizero Evo SL and Asics Novablast 5, both of which we count among the best running shoes available.

On Cloudsurfer 2 review

How’s The Fit

Nick and Kieran both found the shoe fit comfortably in their normal running shoe size, though the toe box is not the roomiest, so if you are big for your size there is the potential to go half a size up.

The Run Test: Likes

The CloudTec Phase rocker works well, especially at easy paces, when the midsole eases you from heel to toe very smoothly. The shoe feels natural to run and disappears on the foot nicely, and it’s comfortable for easy runs of any distance.

While the foam is soft and comfortable, it’s not so mushy as to be unstable or energy-sapping, and the slightly firmer feel compared with the previous model makes the Cloudsurfer 2 better for longer runs because the foam is more resilient and retains its shape.

The extra rubber on the outsole should improve the durability of the shoe compared with the Cloudsurfer 2023, as should the marginally firmer midsole. We also didn’t have any problems with the grip of the Cloudsurfer 2 while running in wet and cold conditions in the British winter.

As an added bonus, the shoe is also a bit a of a looker, making it suitable to wear outside your runs for some added value. As long as you don’t get it as dirty as we did during testing.

The Run Test: Dislikes

The Helion foam in the midsole is comfortable but it isn’t that bouncy or responsive, with the Cloudsurfer 2 instead relying on its rocker geometry to create an enjoyable ride. That works fine at easy paces, but it didn’t feel as good when we upped the pace, when Nick felt that the rocker flattened out and the lack of spring from the foam was more evident.

This could mean the Cloudsurfer 2 isn’t a great shoe for heavier runners or those who put more force into the shoe with their running style, as the rocker might not be as noticeable. It’s one that we felt was at its best for easy runs, and wasn’t that versatile despite being fairly light.

The Cloudsurfer 2 is also a little more expensive than many of its direct rivals, which come in around £130-140/$140-150 compared with £150/$160 for the On.

Verdict And Alternatives

The On Cloudsurfer 2 is a comfortable daily trainer that excels for easy runs thanks to its impressive rocker geometry. Its stylish design also makes it an appealing option for both running and casual wear. However, with strong competition in the daily trainer category, its lack of responsiveness at faster paces and higher price tag means we rate some shoes ahead of it.

For one, the Adidas Adizero Evo SL has a springier midsole foam plus an aggressive rocker, making it better for faster runs while its still comfortable for easy efforts, if less stable than the On.

The Hoka Mach 6 and New Balance Rebel v4 are two other lightweight daily trainers that have a bit more range than the Cloudsurfer 2, and are both cheaper as well, while the Asics Novablast 5 offers a more cushioned but similarly versatile ride at a lower price.
