The Puma ForeverRun Nitro 2 is a cushioned running shoe that has moved further into the stability category than its predecessor mostly thanks to a wider midsole base. It’s one of the best running shoes for beginners thanks to its comfortable, supportive ride, and a good cushioned shoe to use in rotation with faster trainers if you’re a more experienced runner.

It can compete with the best running shoes for those with stability needs, with the Saucony Hurricane 24 offering an alternative option that has a lower drop and is more rockered, while the Asics Gel-Kayano 31 offers a bit more cushioning.

Adidas Adizero Evo SL review

How’s The Fit

Nick tested the ForeverRun Nitro 2 for us and it fit him well in his normal running shoe size. The padded collar and structured upper provide a supportive yet non-restrictive feel, and didn’t irritate his Achilles, unlike the Puma Magmax Nitro.

The Run Test: Likes

Nick ran 60km in the shoe across different types of runs — including easy runs, long runs, and progression runs — and the ForeverRun Nitro 2 delivers a smooth and stable experience. The additional width in the midfoot enhances stability, making it a more suitable option for runners who require extra support, but the stability features don’t intrude upon the run so it works for neutral runners as well.

While the shoe is heavier than its predecessor, the Nitro foam provides a responsive ride that counteracts the extra weight. That said, the shoe performs best during easy and long runs, especially recovery runs where the added support is welcome.

The grip is also exceptional, as we’ve now come to expect from any Puma shoe that uses its PumaGrip rubber, and the ForeverRun Nitro 2 offers good value compared to alternatives like the Asics Gel-Kayano 31 and Saucony Hurricane 24.

The Run Test: Dislikes

The Puma ForeverRun Nitro 2 has gained weight compared to the original shoe and especially at higher speeds some runners may notice the slightly bottom-heavy feel. It’s not the most versatile option as a result, and neutral runners who loved the first version of the shoe as an all-rounder might not benefit from the tradeoff of increased stability for added weight.

It would be best used in rotation with a lighter, faster shoe, and if you’re a neutral runner you might prefer to opt for the livelier Velocity Nitro 3 or MagMax Nitro in Puma’s range.

Verdict And Alternatives

The Puma ForeverRun Nitro 2 is an impressive stability shoe that offers a lot of support and comfort without being so bulky as to be completely lacking in versatility. The wider base, dual-density midsole and sidewalls of foam create a stable ride without it feeling intrusive.

For runners seeking a reliable, well-priced stability trainer that doesn’t compromise on cushioning, the ForeverRun Nitro 2 is a great option. It will work well for heavier runners, beginners, or as a supportive cushioned shoe in a marathon runner’s rotation.

The Saucony Hurricane 24 has a lot of similar qualities with a more rockered design that some might prefer, while the Asics Gel-Kayano 31 is another good cushioned stability shoe but it’s a b
